Why do some guitarists take the back scratch plate off their stratocaster?

You know, the one, the little protect that hides the springs for the bridge. I want to know why a lot of Strat users I’ve seen have done that. I think it looks pretty cool, but I don’t want to mess up my lovely Special Edition HSS strat.
