Is being a radio DJ a good idea?

I’ve had my heart set on being a radio DJ for almost 3 years, and have been accepted to the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland, but I’ve heard that DJs don’t get treated well & stuff. This is something I really wanna do, but I want a second opinion. What do you Yahoo!-ers think I should do?

It depends on if you want to take it as your life career or just for fun, if its for fun then you can give it a try if not then you have to think seriously

it really depends actually. to me, i think radio DJs are really cool and they should be respected cos sometimes they have to do late night shifts or early morning shifts. and they are on air all the time so they have to be really careful with their words, like no swearing. being a DJ is kinda cool and i heard many people enjoy their job as a DJ as it allows you to be more sociable and stuff. if you really want this job you should take it up, maybe its just a rumour that DJ get treated badly.

If youtube and myspace just don’t get you the attention you crave, try radio. Its the next best form of artificial popularity and celebrity. Don’t forget, to be a “good” DJ you have to have a fake, upbeat personality.

Here’s an answer from the trenches. I’ve been in radio for 24 years. I’ll give you the good and the bad.

    The good:
Working in radio can be an absolute blast. It really is fun. It’s possible to meet a lot of people, including recording artists.

    The not-quite-so -good:

It’s likely that you will end up working some odd shifts, weekends and such if you decide on doing radio as a career.
Radio is relentless in that it is a 24/7/365 commitment. At least in the beginning, be prepared to work some hours that others don’t want. The plus to this is that starting out as a weekend announcer can help you get your foot in the door.

I started as an overnight board operator and was working a regular air shift within a few weeks.

    The bad:
You can be fired at anytime for anything. This is often done right when you get off the air and management says, “You’ve done a great job. That was your last air shift with us because we’re going in a different direction…” or something similar.
There is NO job security whatsoever. There are two classes of DJs; Those who have been fired, and those who WILL be fired. Even if they have done nothing wrong; it’s just the nature of the beast.

Once radio gets in your blood, you can’t get it out. If you want to do radio, go for it..just be aware of how things can go.

    Best wishes to you!

Take everything with a pinch of salt and do it. It’s well worth the good points and if you don’t like it, it can take you to other stuff anyway.
